IGBO RACE IS GEARING TOWARDS EXTINCTION

... Bishop Ukwuoma appeals for change of heart and repentance

329On Thursday, 2nd February, 2012, the Catholic Bishop of Orlu, Most Rev. Dr. Augustine T. Ukwuoma publicly condemned the predominant acts of violence and insecurity in the country. He made this known at All Saints’ Catholic Parish Ebenator during the Funeral Mass for Late Chief Alphonsus Okuma who was murdered in cold blood on November last year by men of the underworld. He wondered why the Igbos as a race can no longer love themselves as before when we were each other’s brother’s keeper. These days, out of jealousy, envy, greed, the Igbos have engaged in massive destruction of themselves and may eventually roll into extinction. He warned the Igbos, that the present rate of killing, kidnapping, violence and hatred creeping into the land have placed the Igbo race at danger point and may as a consequence, bring about her loss of stronghold and may unfortunately disappear from the face of the earth only to be remembered by history.

The Prelate appealed to the people of God to watch the type of love that exists among brothers and sisters in other ethnic groups like the Hausas and the Yorubas etc. “They are more together than the Igbos”, he stressed. The recent abnormal national episodes in the country have shown that other ethnic groups have strong and enviable ethnic bond than the Igbos. “That is why since the ‘Boko Haram’ issue”, the Shepherd continued, “the Hausas have all disappeared from the East but our brothers and sisters in the North have refused to come back if not for any other thing, but for the kind of violent treatment, hatred, kidnapping and the wicked act of assassination that have become their lot as if to say that death is the ethnic inheritance of the Igbo group”.
